I still think about Marius Ciuchete’s words who used to tell me in a simple and honest way:
“Alienate yourself from people who only want money. When their only goal is making money out of a project they will certainly leave you behind at the first sign of trouble. Team yourself up with passionate people. Team yourself up with crazy people who want to make a change around them.”
I was asked by many people “How much money do you make from your blog?” and I keep explaining that it’s not about money, it’s not about rewards or revenue. It’s just about passion. And I immediately get answers like “I’m going to start a blog too…what could I write about?” And I feel responsible to explain that it’s not as easy as it looks like and if you’re going to start blogging just for the money, it’s better if you don’t even start.
Then I look at the people starting to work in marketing and communication. Life in this domain is great, right? You speak at conferences, you drink coffee everyday, work on that new laptop you got from the agency, you approve and confirm projects, you’re in meetings all day, dictate the trend on the market, dream about ideas for the clients, etc. Anybody can work in advertising, right?
Allow me to laugh and tell you that life in advertising is not as “sweet” as it seems to you (and people who used to work or still work in the field will approve)
The moment that helped me answer the question “why do you want advertising” happened when I was working in a small agency (3 people). One day, the head of the agency came up and told us “we have to choose a way because we have very few clients and the agency ran out of money. I can either fire you and we say goodbye now, or you get unemployment benefits and I pay you 50$ extra?” I was practically working for half of the minimum wage. And yes, I accepted the offer because I wanted to keep working in an agency. It was what I wanted to do.
My passion for marketing helped me realize this is what I wanted to do.
In conclusion, I just want to say one thing that I hope makes you realize if you want to keep going forward on this road.
