Let’s face it, dear marketers, we’re all suffering from this year’s disease!

Although marketing has proven to be a very active field and is witnessing a huge growth, lately this is due to a disease that has taken over the most influential people in the field.

A disease that’s taking control over me, and certainly over you too. A disease that accelerates your thinking process and sometimes makes you react faster that the person sitting next to you. A disease that doesn’t kill you, but makes you stronger (and maybe raises your Klout score).

Let’s face it, dear colleagues, we’re suffering from this year’s disease: trendophilia.

What is trendophilia?

Trendophilia is defined as a condition of the thinking process at work, manifested through a lot of research, anger, social media sharing and it can sometimes lead to positive results.

Trendophilia can be acute, in the case of a short term recent onset, or it can be chronic, in which case you start thinking in trendophil terms and it can affect (in a positive or negative way) the brand you’re working for. The cause of this disease is usually a virtual infection called “viral”.

The „trend” virus was at first noticed in the early years of Wall Street advertising, but it started spreading when the virtual infection, the viral, began to insert itself more and more in the online and offline communication campaigns.
Marketers affected by the disease were invited to conferences and events, wrote books and blogs and spread the disease forwards.

What are the symptoms of tredophilia? Trendophilia, acute or chronic, manifests itself by:

  • non-stop connection to the virtual world (by mobile, tablet or laptop)
  • preventing colleagues from workings (by shouting through the office, Facebook messages or even Mass E-mails) just to show them the next trend (Youtube video, article, Instagram picture, etc.)
  • an overuse of the work “trend” in a pitch, client meeting and everyday life (“C’mon love, that’s the trend”)
  • sharing all the viral items on every social network

British Researchers have stated that “tredophilia” severely restrains personal life but can be fought by disconnecting from the internet, not using a mobile phone and limited contact with fellow colleagues that suffer from this disease.

P.S. Dilemma: Should I report this article as a pamphlet or not? 🙂
