Normally, I should have written this particular article before writing the one where I recommend 8 must-listen podcasts for those who work in digital or content marketing, right? But because I don’t like being trapped in a box and going by strict rules I don’t think this is such a big deal.
Since I’ve started listening to podcasts I have realized what an extraordinary opportunity it creates for building a community. Sure enough, specialists from different fields (not just from marketing, communication and advertising) should pay more attention to this channel and do more than just wait for this trend to hit them right in the face. It’s definitely a field ready for testing and experimenting on.
I believe we should start listening to podcasts at least once every couple of days, if not every single day. As I mentioned before, I listen to podcasts on my way to work or while on the road. I am subscribed to 12 channels and I am trying to keep up with them all.
Did you know that 15% of Americans listen to podcasts? This means approximately 40 million people (via Edison Research). And audio consumers spend between 8 minutes and 6 hours a day listening to podcasts. Statistics show that people prefer to “consume” podcasts over other types of audio content (AM/FM Radio, Music etc.).
“I get it, Robert! But those people are in American! They have highways and it takes them an hour to get to the office and that’s why they have time to listen to this stuff. Americans have always been “different”, you know that!”
Maybe you’re one this people that agree, but let me put it this way: what’s stopping you from listening to podcasts? Time? Money? Nerves? Your phone? Or are you simply too comfortable to try something else?
Podcasts are not a new phenomenon. Do you remember that moment when you listened to your favorite radio show straight from your mobile phone? Well…it’s something like that. It’s just that podcast shows can be downloaded and re/re/re-listened to. Also, you can subscribe to different channels and stay in touch with the creators.
I recommend you to listen to podcasts:
1. If you can walk or bike to your office
2. If by the nature of your job you have to travel more and you would like to usefully fill your time with something other than music or phone calls.
3. If you think you could listen to them while shopping, exercising, jogging, drawing, painting
4. When you want to know the opinion of other people in the industry
5. When you want to follow the trend of a specific industry
And perhaps after listening to podcasts for a few months you will get the idea of starting a similar project yourself. Who knows?
