I remember a day when my brother and I went to engrave something on a candle. We arrived at an advertising agency. A guy comes up in a shirt with the name of the agency on it (that’s what branding probably meant for them). We tell him our story and what we need. He looks at the candle, he looks at us, then, while studying the object in his hand he says: “theoretically we can take care of anything …but we cannot help you at the moment”. We gave him a nice thank you and respectfully got out of the “office”.
On the way back to the house I kept thinking about this problem that’s too common nowadays, not just with advertising agencies, but with us, as people.
Specialization.
Each person has to specialize in something, right? To know his value and invest in it. If you’re good at something, start investing in it! Buy books. Read. Study. Research. Experiment. Fail. Try more and more. People should be aware that this is your field, this is what you’re passionate about and this is what you want to do the rest of your life.
Personally, I realized that I want to work in digital marketing, that’s why I bought books on the subject and I’m studying it everyday. Moreover, I try to wake up every day at 6:00 just to read a poor book and browse the internet to be up the date with what’s happening.
As for people searching for a job, you can write all you want in your CV that you’ve been a PR or a sales agent, it still won’t help you. Specialize in something! Be the best in your field or at least try to be!
I have a friend who was interested in programming since forever. He used to spend his nights studying everything about IT, codin, web design, CSS etc. He started his own company and he is now a national manager at an international company. How did he do it? He specialized and worked for it, and for that he has earned my respect.
What is your field?
